South Burlington, VT - The Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization (CCMPO) is currently updating its 2003 Regional Bicycle-Pedestrian Plan with assistance from Wilbur Smith Associates and Alta Planning + Design. The public is invited to review and provide comments on initial draft documents during a meeting at the South Burlington City Hall on March 13 at 7 p.m. Three proposed components of the plan update will be available for public input:

  • Vision, goals and objectives for the 2008 Plan Update

The Regional Bicycle-Pedestrian Plan provides guidance for the implementation of interconnected bicycle and pedestrian networks throughout Chittenden County. These networks are critical in creating a truly multimodal transportation system that serves residents and visitors alike. Education and encouragement programs for bicycling and walking are an important addition to the current update. These types of programs offer unique and interesting ideas on how to get more people walking and biking, as well as ways to educate both motorized and nonmotorized travelers on the rules and responsibilities for all travel modes.

The updated plan will also identify progress made since adoption of the 2003 Plan, provide an up-to-date map of existing and proposed bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and prioritize new projects and regional links and provide cost estimates for potential projects.

The plan update is on schedule to be completed by July 2008. The public will have an opportunity to review and comment on a complete draft before a final version is released.

The CCMPO is a federally funded but locally controlled organization serving Chittenden County's 18 municipalities. The public is encouraged to become involved in this and all local projects.
