South Burlington, VT -
The Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization (CCMPO) recently awarded grants to Hinesburg, Essex, Shelburne, and Burlington for sidewalk projects in their communities. The CCMPO Sidewalk Program, now in its third year, had $250,000 available for sidewalk engineering, design, and construction projects.
"Sidewalks are key components of a community's infrastructure that don't always get the funding they deserve," said Peter Keating, CCMPO Senior Planner. "This grant program strives to provide the means of improving public sidewalk systems and encourages connections between neighborhoods, schools, parks, town centers, and other destinations."
This year's winning applications represent projects that create vital linkages between existing sidewalks as well as new sidewalks that will provide safe and convenient routes between neighborhoods:
- Hinesburg: construct new sidewalk along west side of Route 116 to connect residential homes with recreation areas, town facilities, and other local amenities.
- Essex: engineering and design of sidewalk along Vermont Route 15 between Sunset Drive and Essex Square Shopping Center.
- Shelburne: engineering and design of sidewalk along Mt. Philo Road between Falls Road and Wild Ginger Lane.
- Burlington: connect existing sidewalks on Flynn Avenue and construct new sidewalk near entrance to Oakledge Park.
Cities and towns in Chittenden County are eligible to apply to the federally funded program. Grant applications are due each May with awards announced in June. Questions about this program should be directed to Peter Keating at 660.4071 Ext. 14 or pkeating@ccmpo.org..
