The U.S. Census Bureau has just released the Population Estimates for Vermont cities and towns.
Data is available for download at - http://crs.uvm.edu/census/estimates/town/ or at - http://www.census.gov/popest/.
Users should update previous Census population estimates (e.g. 2000-2003) with these new figures.
The Census Bureau uses the "Distributive Housing Unit Method" to derive municipal population estimates.
This method uses housing unit estimates to distribute the county population to subcounty areas within the county. Housing unit estimates use building permits, mobile home shipments, and estimates of housing unit loss to update housing unit change since the last census. The Census Bureau does use vital statistics data in producing the initial county estimates, but NOT for the town and city numbers.
You are advised to compare these estimates to other July 1 estimates only: the July 1 population estimates for 2000 – 2004 were created with a different methodology than the April 1 Census 2000 number. Therefore, in a comparison of 2004 to 2000, it is more statistically sound to compare the July 1 2004 estimates with the July 1 2000 estimates than with the Census 2000 numbers.
Finally, know that municipalities can challenge their Census population estimate within 180 day's of the estimate's release. Interested municipalities can contact the Vermont State Data Center using the contact information above.
