CCMPO Plans the Future of Transportation in Chittenden County

South Burlington, VT - The 2003 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), the long-range transportation plan for Chittenden County, will be presented at an open house and public hearing held by the board of the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization (CCMPO) on October 22, in the South Burlington High School cafeteria.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with an open house. Six stations staffed by CCMPO staff and board members will provide information and maps about topic areas in the MTP, including: bicycle and pedestrian improvements, public transit, maintaining existing systems, and finishing critical roadway links. At 7 p.m. the public hearing will begin with a CCMPO staff presentation on the MTP. A public comment period will follow.

“People who are thinking of making an investment in a home or business in coming years will want to attend this meeting to find out what’s being planned throughout Chittenden County,” said Bill Knight, executive director of the CCMPO. “From creating bike lanes and coordinating traffic signals to planning new highway capacity, this meeting will provide information on what is planned in the MTP throughout the County.”

The MTP is a 25-year plan that responds to the transportation needs of a growing and changing population. Just as population, real estate, and employment change over time, so do travel habits and needs. It addresses transportation from a regional, as well as a local standpoint.

The plan identifies an expected allocation of $1.04 billion over the next 25 years. The allocation of these funds recognizes public priorities. Extensive public input gathered during the development of this plan at public meetings, presentations and through a public opinion survey, revealed that people in Chittenden County place high priority on preserving existing infrastructure. Of the $1.04 billion estimated for capital projects from 2001 to 2025, more than half is for system preservation.

The MTP is multi-modal, incorporating plans for highways, buses, trains, airplanes, bicycles, and walkers. It provides for maintenance and improvement of existing roads and highways, sidewalks, and recreation paths. The MTP also contains plans for commuter rail service, park and ride facilities, and expanded bus transit. Efficiency improvements, and safety for pedestrians and vehicles are part of the transportation plan as well.

The meeting will be held at South Burlington High School, 550 Dorset Street, South Burlington. Meetings are open to the public. For more information, visit www.ccmpo.org, or call the CCMPO at 660-4071 ext.223.
