CCMPO Elects New Officers

South Burlington, VT - At its annual meeting Wednesday, June 18, the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization announced its board officers for the 2003-2004 term. Elected as chair was Jim Condos of South Burlington, as vice chair was Jeff McDonald of Charlotte, as secretary-treasurer was Mike O'Brien of Winooski, and to the executive committee at large, were Virginia Clarke of Richmond and Chris Conant of Colchester.

The CCMPO's new chair Jim Condos is a Vermont State Senator from South Burlington and serves as chair of South Burlington City Council. He is on the board of directors of the VT League of Cities and Towns. He is also the Public Affairs Manager for Vermont Gas Systems. “I can bring my three years of experience on the CCMPO board, and my knowledge of state and local processes to leading the CCMPO as chair for the next year,” he said. William Keogh of Burlington is stepping down after 3 years of service as the board's chair. He will continue to serve on the board.

Vice chair elect Jeff McDonald, the Charlotte representative, has been involved with the CCMPO for nearly 10 years. McDonald said, “I can bring a rural perspective to the board. Charlotte is a corridor to the urban core. We’re sensitive to the impact of traffic on main and tributary roads.” McDonald works as a civil engineer at Dufresne-Henry and also serves as the chairman of the Charlotte Planning Commission.

Michael O’Brien, elected as secretary/treasurer, has served on the board since 1999 and brings his years of experience to the position. He is a member of the Winooski City Council. He works as a commercial real estate appraiser for Keller, Navin, O’Brien and Kassenberger.

Virginia Clarke, elected to the executive committee at large, has been involved with the CCMPO for five years, and prior to that was involved with the Rural Planning Organization (RPO); CCMPO was expanded in 1998 to incorporate the RPO. She also served on the Richmond Selectboard. “I can bring the important rural perspective to the executive committee,” Clarke said. She is also a member of the District Four Environmental Commission. Clarke is a veterinarian at the Richmond Animal Hospital.

Chris Conant, a member of the CCMPO for four years, has been elected to the executive committee at large. Conant has served on the Town of Colchester Selectboard for the past six years. “As part of the Executive Committee, I can contribute practical thinking when dealing with transportation needs. I was raised in Vermont and have seen changes in Chittenden County over the years. I can bring that historical perspective to the board,” he said. Conant owns Claussen’s Florist and Greenhouse in Colchester.

The CCMPO was established in 1982 under federal law. It is authorized to help regional decision-makers and constituents plan, prioritize, and coordinate the use of federal funds for transportation projects, as well as address on-going transportation-related policy issues. Chittenden County is the only densely populated area in Vermont that meets the definition of a metropolitan area with a population that is greater than 50,000 people.
