South Burlington, VT- William Knight, executive director
of the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization,
has
been
appointed by Governor James Douglas to the newly formed Vermont
Transportation Operations Council. The Operations Council advises
VTrans on statewide transportation issues.
“
I think the CCMPO can make a positive contribution to not only
coordinate transportation plans between Chittenden County and
the rest of the state, but between modes of transportation as
well. I look forward to working with the other communities and
Governor Douglas on improving transportation in Vermont,” said
Knight. The CCMPO is the transportation planning agency for Chittenden
County, authorized to help regional decision-makers and constituents
plan, prioritize, and coordinate the use of federal funds for
transportation projects, as well as address on-going transportation-related
policy issues. It is Vermont’s only MPO.
Specifically, the Operations Council is to identify areas where
transportation improvements could be a catalyst for economic
growth or where transportation deficiencies may imperil existing
economic development, identify opportunities for improved coordination
between various transportation modes and recommend changes
in the planning and funding of transportation improvements.
Its
first meeting will be held on June 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. at VTrans.
The CCMPO was established in 1982 under federal law. Chittenden
County is the only densely populated area in Vermont that meets
the definition of a metropolitan area with a population greater
than 50,000 people. For more information, visit www.ccmpo.org.
