Here provided are the latest highlight sources of available freight data.


FREIGHT DATA RESOURCES:

FHWA - Freight Analysis Framework (FAF)

Created from various sources (including Reebie data), the FAF is a comprehensive attempt to distribute of origin/destination of freight flows on the entire transportation network for the United States. This includes freight flow forecasts up to the year 2020. An O-D profile for each state exists on this website.

        

ITDS - International Trade Data System
U.S. Customs Border Crossing/Entry Data. ITDS is an initiative to develop an integrated government-wide system for the electronic collection and dissemination of international trade data. ITDS plans to capture all Trans-Shipments of imports, exports, and bonded (moving through) shipments in the U.S. U.S. Customs will collect this data via their Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) system (still not fully operational).

        

Transborder Surface Freight Dataset
Contains North American trade data classified by; surface mode (truck, rail, pipeline, etc.), weight on imports, value, Port of Entry or Exit, freight charges, and commodity type, presented for U.S. exports and imports to/from Canada and Mexico. Reporting system has disparities, where companies report value instead of weight of goods, and headquarters location instead of port/facility location (i.e. "Headquarters Effect"). Data is released every month for three months prior, and dates back to 1994.

        

BTS Airline Information

Airline Freight Origin/Destination (O-D) information. No commodity or value detail available.

        

Commodity Flow Survey (CFS)

Domestic import data (no export data) for manufacturing, wholesale, mining, and selected other industries. Exists for 1993, 1997, and will be conducted for 2002 (with a smaller sample size than the 1997 survey, due to budget constraints). The 2002 survey will contain HazMat data.

        

Vehicle Inventory & Use Survey (VIUS)

Formerly known as the Truck Inventory & Use Survey (TIUS), The Vehicle Inventory & Use Survey is a record of private and commercial (non-gov't) registered trucks in the U.S., as well as the physical and operational characteristics of the Nation's truck population.

        

Waterbourne Data (MARAD & the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers)

Cargo summaries, Traffic, Fleet, and Port Statistics. May have the "Headquarters Effect".

        

Canadian Trucking Origin/Destination Survey (TOD)

This survey covers only Canadian domiciled carriers. Firms must earn $1m annually. Shipments must be at least 80km one-way to be in the survey. Motor carriers of freight survey has a quarterly release. Contains; Estimated tonnage, Estimated ton-kilometres, Estimated shipments, Operating revenues, Operating expenses, Operating ratio. Entails cost to retrieve from the website. Fairly inexpensive.

        

Transport Canada - Annual Report of Import/Export Activity

Outlines data on: international trade and trade flows, productivity and price performance of transportation, government spending, safety and security, freight and passenger information, environment, and others.

        

PIERS Data

Waterbourne export and import freight data including; weight, commodity detail, and container information, by Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU). Data is for US ports to Int'l ports.
