Description:
Abstract:
CCMPO_AADT ~ This database contains a gamut of annually collected traffic data for Chittenden County, Vermont, from the period of 1944 through 2007. Contained within the zipfile referenced in this document, are -- a text-comma-delimited spreadsheet, a proprietary spreadsheet (Microsoft, Inc. Excel file), and a geospatial shapefile. Thus far, the items within the table of database reference the following; AADT (Annual Average Daily Traffic) Volumes on specific road segments, AADTT (Annual Average Daily Truck Traffic), Speed data (85th percentile, 10 MPH Pace, Mean Speed, & Some Posted Speed Limit data), Station site location descriptions, Station ID Numbers (those pertaining to a CCMPO assignment system, as well as the standard ID Numbers used by the Vermont Agency of Transportation - VTrans in their traffic counting program.)... This database consists of data retrieved and processed from Automatic Traffic Recorder (ATR) units utilised during CCMPO's & VTrans's annual Traffic Count Programs (conducted during non-winter months).
Purpose:
This data represents the status of traffic occurance on any particular segment of roadway or intersection assigned a "Traffic Count Station". It is used for traffic impact studies and scoping study alternatives, where data collected over time can yield an expected trend of traffic... The data is also used to check the accuracy of the CCMPO Regional Travel-Demand Model...

CCMPO Annual Traffic Count Program, 1994-2007. VTrans Traffic Counts, 1944-2005. It is likely that Joe Segale of CCMPO began to compile the locations of the traffic count stations and AADT totals sometime in the late 1990's. CCMPO personnel subsequently coordinating work on the database include - Dave Roberts, Senior Transportation Planner (2000-2002), Daryl Benoit, Transportation Planner (2002-2007). Transportation Technicians and Interns included - Peter Burch (2001), Casey Garvey (2000-2002), Jason S. Sobel (2001-2002), Brian Bertsch (2000-2002), JEB (2002), Janine White (2003), April Lagacy (2003), Erin Flynn (2003-2004), Justin Tougas (2003), David Donahue (2004), Michael T. Birkby (2004), Hohai Dong (2004-2005), Brian Fernandes (2005), Marcy Brownell (2005), Anna Lisius (2005), Evan Kamein (2006), Laura J. Stone (2006), Katherine Rich (2006), Taylor Newton (2006-2007), Matthew Smith (2007), Courtney Wakem (2007), Ryan Groesbeck (2007). Other contributors included - Maureen Carr, VTrans (2003-2004) who provided AOT derived Truck data for 1994-2002, and John Blodgett, VTrans (2004) who provided historical AADT data dating back to 1944.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
AADT ~ A key statistical indicator for roadway counts, known as the "Annual Average Daily Traffic", or AADT, has been developed to represent the average amount of vehicular traffic in both directions of travel, passing on a given point of road, over a 24-hour period, on a typical day of the year.

AADT figures for CCMPO Traffic Count Stations were calculated for a 7-day week (including weekend days). The final AADT figure used for public distribution has been multiplied by a seasonal adjustment coefficient (either outlined in the annually published VTrans "REDBOOK", or derived by CCMPO using data from internally selected Continuous Traffic Count sites). The resulting AADT is then rounded according to the specifications in the "AASHTO Guidelines for Traffic Data Programs", where: Volumes of 0 to 999 Round to the nearest 10, Volumes of 1,000 to 9,999 Round to the nearest 100, and Volumes >= 10,000 Round to the nearest 1,000.

AADT figures for VTrans Stations contain both actual and estimated volumes for each traffic section along a particular route. The methodology for deriving volumes follows - 1. An actual count, if one was available for the particular road segment. 2. In the case of an estimated count, if a coverage count was taken in a nearby section, the growth rate for that segment was applied to the section. 3. If no counts were taken in the vicinity, the statewide average growth rate for the appropriate class of road was applied, or the relationship of adjacent section(s) actual counts to appropriate turning movement. In compliance with the Traffic Monitoring Guide, the following rounding procedures are used in this data for actual and estimated 1996 AADTs - if count is greater than 1000, round to nearest 10. If count is less than 1000 round to nearest 100.

The attributes have been double-checked against the CCMPO AADT Calculation spreadsheet (CCMPO_AADT_Calculations.xls), the VTrans - '2003 Route Logs', the VTrans - 'Automatic Traffic Recorder Station History 1975 -2003' spreadsheet, Historical AADT for the 15 full-year counters in operation before 1990 from John Blodgett of Program Development, Vermont Agency of Transportation, and the VTrans - 'Automatic Vehicle Classification History 1994-2003' spreadsheet obtained from Maureen Carr at the Traffic Research Unit of the Technical Services Division at the Vermont Agency of Transportation.

85TH PERCENTILE SPEED ~ The maximum speed at which 85% vehicles are travelling.

10 MPH PACE SPEED ~ 10 mph range in which the majority of cars are traveling.

MEAN SPEED ~ Average Speed.

CLASS OF TOWN HIGHWAY ~ Class 1 town highways are the sections of state routes that continue through larger villages or cities and which carry a state highway route number. Class 2 town highways are those town highways selected as the most important highways in each town. As far as practicable they shall be selected with the purposes of securing trunk lines of improved highways from town to town and to places which by their nature have more than normal amount of traffic. The minimum standards for class 3 highways are a highway negotiable under normal conditions all seasons of the year by a standard manufactured pleasure car. This would include but not be limited to sufficient surface and base, adequate drainage, and sufficient width capable to provide winter maintenance. Class 4 town highways are all other town highways.

HIGHWAY FUNCTIONAL CLASSIFICATION ~ 0 - Not part of Functional Classification System, 1 - Rural Principal Arterial - Interstate, 2 - Rural Principal Arterial, 4 - Rural Principal Arterial - Other (not other freeway); not a standard federal code, 6 - Rural Minor Arterial, 7 - Rural Major Collector, 8 - Rural Minor Collector, 9 - Rural Local, 11 - Urban Principal Arterial - Interstate, 12 - Urban Principal Arterial - Other Freeway, 14 - Urban Principal Arterial - Other, 16 - Urban Minor Arterial, 17 - Urban Collector, 19 - Urban Local.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
This database consists of data retrieved and processed from Automatic Traffic Recorder (ATR) units utilised during CCMPO's & VTrans's annual Traffic Count Programs (conducted during non-winter months). It is expected that the database will be updated at least annually until either fixed-roadway transportation systems or digital database technology are rendered obsolete...
Completeness_Report:
Counts are not collected for each location every year, except for the VTrans Continuous Traffic Count Stations (CTC).

This data has been obtained from Automatic Traffic Recorders (ATRs) used during the annual CCMPO Traffic Count Program starting in 1994. Additional processed ATR (AADT) data from VTrans has been added to this database. The lineage of this orignal database has not been documented. It is likely that it was started by Joe Segale in the 1990's.
