2010 Campaign for Active Transportation

The 2010 Campaign for Active Transportation is a national effort that aims to build on the success of the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program in SAFETEA-LU. The goal: empowering dozens of communities to each advocate for $50 million in federal funds to make focused investments in infrastructure and programs to shift automobile trips to walking and biking. The campaign, spearheaded by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, aims to double the federal investment in active transportation in the next transportation reauthorization.

CCMPO is leading the local effort and in collaboration with our partners has submitted our contribution to the national case statement: A Report that highlights potential projects should federal funding be approved and Chittenden County selected as a participating community. Projects were identified using the recently completed 2008 Regional Bicycle-Pedestrian Plan Update, which itself was guided by the outcomes of the 2007 Bicycle-Pedestrian Summit. The Regional Bicycle-Pedestrian Plan provides the vision for creating an interconnected walking and bicycling network throughout Chittenden County and identifies programs to encourage and educate users about their rights and responsibilities.

Current Status

CCMPO's 18 member municipalities and 10 other local partners (Listed below) all expressed unanimous support for this program by signing this Resolution. CCMPO and partners are planning a press conference for October 2008 to roll out our local effort and draw attention for the need for increased funding to help close the gaps in our existing walking and biking network and to improve and expand efforts to educate and encourage more people to walk and bike. More information about the press conference will be coming soon!
